How to use the AP Music Theory practice exams
Each exam is a timed AP Music Theory practice exam, with multiple-choice and free-response sections. Every question has an explanation of the correct answer and of each wrong choice, and is tagged with the AP skill and topic it tests, so a missed question points straight to what to review.
- Work through the units first. The exams draw on all 8 units: Unit 1 (Music Fundamentals I: Pitch, Major Scales and Key Signatures, Rhythm, Meter, and Expressive Elements), Unit 2 (Music Fundamentals II: Minor Scales and Key Signatures, Melody, Timbre, and Texture), Unit 3 (Music Fundamentals III: Triads and Seventh Chords), Unit 4 (Harmony and Voice Leading I: Chord Function, Cadence, and Phrase), Unit 5 (Harmony and Voice Leading II: Chord Progressions and Predominant Function), Unit 6 (Harmony and Voice Leading III: Embellishments, Motives, and Melodic Devices), Unit 7 (Harmony and Voice Leading IV: Secondary Function), Unit 8 (Modes and Form).
- Take Exam 1 in one sitting with the timer on, the way you will sit the real exam. Your score estimate is only meaningful under real timing.
- Review every question you missed or guessed. Group the misses by unit and skill, then go back to that unit's video, notes, and flashcards before the next exam.
- Space the remaining exams about a week apart so each one measures what you learned since the last. Save Exam 5, the hardest, for the final week before test day.
